Fall Nail Trends 2012:
5. Whimsical Nail Art – From hypnotic swirls at Nicole Miller inspired by Jimi Hendrix tunes to the hand painted Phillipe Blond helmet heads at The Blonds and “Flirty Flower” bright tulip nails at Rachel Antonoff, nail designs were colorful and expressive on the runway. Get the “Time Machine” manicure from Nicole Miller at home by painting the entire nail with one coat of CND Colour in Plumville, then using a toothpick or detailing brush, swirl the following colors together: Electric Orange, Bicycle Yellow and Anchor Blue.

Fall Nail Trends 2012:
4. Leather & Lace – Nail art ran the gamut backstage at Fashion Week, but this type nail art was all grown up. Leather and lace was used in an edgy way at The Blonds (actual leather nails in luxe silver, high shine copper and jet black) and Joy Cioci, where black fishnet-inspired lace decorated the edge of the nail for a sexy spin on the French Manicure. Achieve the leather look at home with two coats of CND Colour in Blackjack followed by one coat of CND Super Matte Top Coat. For the fishnet nails from Joy Cioci, apply CND Colour in Putty and leave the free edge clear. Apply lace or fishnet found in a craft store with nail adhesive over the clear free edge and outline the fabric stitching with CND Colour in Blackjack for a clean look.

Fall Nail Trends 2012:
3. Sugared Neutrals – Creamy nude and lilac tones were a soft look on the runway for a clean and sophisticated finish. For a more creative spin, at Christian Cota CND designed “Terra Cota” nails that featured a neutral faded ombre that was reminiscent of drying clay. Other variations included removing the shine with CND Super Matte Top Coat for a velvety textured look. Get the “Terra Cota” nail at home by applying CND Colour in Putty to entire nail, and using makeup sponge, sponge on CND Colour in Chocolate Milk at the cuticle area to create the neutral faded ombre look. Finish with CND Super Matte Top Coat.

Fall Nail Trends 2012:
2.Hi-Tech Femme – Posh metallic nails contrast neutral clothing and give silk and wool sateens an industrial, urban sheen. These high shine nails in gold and silver were seen on the runway covering the full nail or edging a creamy French mani. Achieve this look with gold or silver foil leafing (found in your local craft store), by apply leafing with a gel brush. Make sure to use top coat to seal and protect your metal mani.

What’s HOT for this Fall?
SWEATER DRESSINGKnitwits, unite! Fall is always about sweaters, but this season has seen a resurgence of delicate, near-gossamer, hand-knit or crochet tops (at Sunhee and Tess Giberson), along with cozy cashmere at Michael Kors, TSE, Richard Chai, and Doo.Ri, sweater dresses at Rag & Bone and Hervé Léger, and colorful crewnecks at M.PATMOS, J.Crew, and Marc Jacobs.
BORROWED FROM THE BOYSMenswear was one of the biggest trends, from oversized tweedy toppers at Rebecca Taylor, Elizabeth and James, and Rebecca Minkoff, to sleek suits and tuxedos at Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, and Imitation (the latter of whom collaborated with NYC menswear tailor Doyle Mueser) to shrunken boy blazers at Karen Walker and on to slouchy grandpa cardigans at Richard Chai, VPL, and Yigal Azrouel.
LAYERINGThe sartorial pile-on was also big news (think: skirts over pants under sweaters, coats, vests, and scarves) at Anna Sui, Chris Benz, Rag & Bone, Libertine, Michael Kors, Richard Chai LOVE, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, and Elizabeth and James, to name just a few. Tess Giberson’s collection, inspired by the wrapping of artist Christo, was devoted entirely to the layered look, while M.PATMOS fashioned her layered pieces from sustainable or eco-friendly wool and alpaca.
SEXY STOCKINGSSeamed stockings made a return at Jason Wu and Rebecca Minkoff, Joy Cioci paired her edgy-ladylike looks with sexy, lace-trimmed stockings that pooled seductively around the ankle, and Italian legwear guru Emilio Cavallini offered all manner of risqué stockings at his Lincoln Center presentation, which was inspired by iconic 50s pin-up model Bettie Page.
DIGITAL PRINTS/HIGH-TECH FABRICSDigitally manipulated photo prints added visual punch to many collections this season, including HAUS ALKIRE (which featured hand-painted photos of Central Park foliage), Lela Rose (a hazed floral that resembled peeling rust), Vera Wang (cathedral arches), Nicole Miller (pixelated tweeds), Thakoon (fluorescent lights), and Zero + Maria Cornejo, who has turned her iPhone photos into prints for several seasons now. Alexander Wang and Calvin Klein led the way on the high-tech fabric front (with peroxide lacquered merino wool and glazed technical wool, respectively), while Narciso Rodriguez, Proenza Schouler, Cynthia Rowley, Doo.Ri, Costello Tagliapietra, and Phillip Lim also experimented with Space Age textiles and treatments.
